ACBICON 2008

1. Fellowship award :- The Association awards Fellowship of ACBI to distinguished members on the basis of their achievements. The nominations for Fellowship are invited annually through announcement in the News Bulletin. Nominations received before 31st. August are considered by an award committee and those found suitable are admitted as Fellows during a convocation held at the time of Annual Conference. Nominations are submitted on prescribed Performa available from the Secretary or from the Head Office. Fellowship is also awarded to past-Presidents of the Association as honouris causa. Till 1997, twenty members have been admitted as Fellows. List of fellows of ACBI are as below :-

2. Awadhesh Saran Memorial Oration Award :- This oration award was instituted in the year 1977 to commemorate Prof. Awadhesh Saran, Founder President of the Association, who died a premature death in 1976. Through this oration the Association honours distinguished scientists to deliver lecture on subjects of interest to clinical bio-chemists. Nominations are invited through News Bulletin for this purpose and selection is made by an Award Committee. The following eminent persons have given orations :

3. Seth G.S. Medical College & K.E.M. Hospital Oration :- The Organizers of the 16th Annual Conference of the Association held at Seth G.S. Medical College & K.E.M. Hospital, Bombay established this oration in 1992 by donating a sum of Rs. 15000/ The oration is held regularly at the time of Annual Conference. 4. K.L. Gupta Memorial Oration :- This oration was instituted by K.L.Gupta Memorial Trust in the year 1993 by a handsome donation to the Association by K. L. Gupta Trust for commemorating the memory of Late K.L. Gupta, a great philanthropist, and father of Dr. T. Malati, ex-President of ACBI. The oration has to be given in the field of cancer.

5. Pitabus-Jamuna Burma Memorial Award :- The award was instituted by Dr. D.P. Burma, past President of the Association in memory of his parents. The contestants for this award have to be a life member of the Association or a membership of at least 3 years duration. The age of the contestants should be below 35 years on 31st of December of the year. The applicants have to submit a a write up (not more than 2000 words) on an original research work in medicine based on approaches in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology, published by any author in any prestigious journal of the world in the preceding one year.

Application along with (1) five typed copies of the write up, (2) five photocopies of the original paper and (3) documentary evidence of age should reach the Secretary by registered post by 31 October of the year. A panel of 3 judges appointed by the President shall scrutinize the papers and select not more than two best papers. The selected candidates shall be invited by the secretary to present their paper orally before the judges at the Annual Conference in special award session. The best candidate selected shall be awarded cash of Rs. 500/- and a certificate at the following conference.

6. K.P. Sinha-P.S. Krishnan Award :- The Award was instituted in the year 1990 jointly by Organising Committee of 13th and 15th. Annual Conferences held at Patna and Jammu by each donating Rs. 10,000/- out of the savings from their respective conferences with a view to encourage biochemists to publish their work in Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry (IJCB). The papers published each year in IJCB are adjudged by a set of 3 Judges appointed by the President in consultation with the Editor of the Journal. The author/authors of the best paper are awarded a certificate and a cheque of Rs. 2000/- to be shared equally between the authors. The following authors have been given the award :

7. Dr. C. Sita Devi Award :- The Organising Committee of the 6th Annual Conference of the Association instituted this award in the name of their Organising Secretary Dr. C. Sita Devi in the year 1985 by donating a sum of Rs. 5000/. Later Dr. Sita Devi further donated a sum of Rs. 5000/-. The award was instituted to encourage young members of the Association to present their work at scientific sessions of the annual conference. The award is given to a life member or member of at least 3 years standing and whose age is below 40 years on 31 December of the year. The contestant for the award submits his/her paper to the Organising Secretary of the Conference. The scientific committee of the conference scrutinises all papers and selects 2 best papers for being beard by judges at special session during the conferences. The winner of the contest is awarded a certificate and a cheque of Rs. 1000/- at the Inaugural Function of the next conference. The list of winners of the award are as under :

8. NIMS Best Poster Award :- The Organising Committee of 19th Annual Conference of ACBI headed by Dr. T. Malati donated in 1994 a sum of Rs. 10,000/ for the purpose of instituting Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Best Poster Award with a view to encourage young members of the Association to present their work in the form of attractive posters. Prior to this, prize was being awarded by the Organising Committee since 1991. Only those authors of posters are considered for award whose age on 31 December of the year is below 40 years. There are 2 awards : (i) One for those posters which are on cancer topic, and another (ii) which are on non-cancer topic. The posters are judged by a set of judges appointed for the purpose. The award is given to successful authors during the inaugural function of the next conference. The following is the list of winners of the award :

9.    P.S. Murthy Award : The Organising Committee of 18th Annual Conference of ACBI held at Delhi in 1992 donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/ for instituting P.S. Murthy Award for best paper presented during a conference on the subject of (i) Infectious diseases and on (ii) Development of drugs from plant sources. If there is no paper in oral presentation worth the award, then paper in poster presentation also shall be taken into account in deciding the winner. The award is open to any type of member of the Association, including sessional members, whose age on 31 December of the year is below 40 years. In each category the best paper author will get a certificate along with a cheque of Rs. 500/ during the Inaugural function of the next Conference. If no award is given in any particular year, then the award money will be given to 2 young delegates who have applied for traveling grant to the Organising Secretary. The presentations of papers are judged by a set of judges so appointed. The papers may be heard in a special session arranged for all award papers. The following is the list of awardees :

10.    MGIMS (Sewagram) Award : The Organising Committee of 20th Annual Conference of ACBI through Dr. B.C. Harinath donated in 1995 a sum of Rs. 10,000/ to institute MGIMS Award for best paper on Tropical Diseases presented during a conference. The paper should be either on biochemical, immunological or molecular aspect of the disease. The award is open to all member delegates to the conference, whose age on 31st December of the year is below 40 years. Even the papers presented in poster sessions are also considered for the award. A set of judges are appointed for the award. The following is the list of awardees :

11.  Dr. T. N. Pattabiraman Oration Award : This oration award was instituted in the year 2004, December by his beloved students by donating Rupees Two lacs One thousand. The Oration award shall be announced by the award committee after receiving nominations from members. Awardee will give oration lecture on topics of interests to Clinical Biochemists, at the time of Annual conference every year.  The awardee shall be presented a memento, certificate and money to cover his/her travel. Nominations are invited through News Bulletin for this purpose and selection is made by an Award Committee. The following eminent persons have given orations :

13. A.C.B.I. Travel Fellowship :  The Travel Fellowship has been constituted by a donation of Rs. Twenty five Thousand by Dr. A. S. Kanagsabapathy, Organising Secretary, ACBI conference, Vellore ; Rs. Twenty Five thousand by Dr. Vijay Singh Thakur, Organising Secretary of Workshop in Quality Control held at AIIMS, New Delhi & Donation of Rs. Fifty Two Thousand by Mr. S. K.  Manhar, Director, Priman Instruments Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi. Applications are invited by the Organising Secretary of the Annual conference,  for availing this fellowship through the conference brochure. This award shall be awarded to Young Members of ACBI below the age of 35 whose paper has been accepted for presentation and has not availed any other assistance through any other source.  The award will be decided by a committe consisting of the Organising Secretary, President and General Secretary of ACBI. The awardee will be  given To and Fro 3 tier sleeper class rail fare to the maximum of Rs. 1000/-. The awardee's name will be announced during the valedictory function of the conference and the cheque will be presented.
